Real Fake: souvenirs from Moses Wilhelm Shapira's workshop

Design: Anat Golan
Story: Lenny Wolfe
Building: Ticho House

Counterfeit: Imitation of something while pretentiously presenting it as the original.

An antiques dealer presents the object in his possession as something unique and rare, with a significant historical and cultural connection or as part of "the real thing". In this way, he ensures the viewer or the potential buyer, to be the owner of a desirable and original object, of material and spiritual value. An object that holds a story and meaning.

In contrast, counterfeiting is an attempt to manipulate the viewer. The forger relies on the original and uses it for his own needs, he creates a false representation in order to convince the audience that he is watching a one-off creation. To a large extent this is also the action of the designer. He uses the collective memory and assimilates historical contexts in order to present a "new" work, when actually it is mixed with material, formal and cultural quotations.
