Gate
Ori Shifrin Anavi
“Gate” is an imagined threshold composed of fruit and vegetable images taken from the branding on cardboard boxes from farmers and grocery suppliers. The gate signifies the continuous transitions between old and new, "high" and "low," inside and outside, reality and imagination. At first glance, the gate appears inviting and evokes feelings of abundance, but upon closer inspection, the manipulation is revealed: the material itself (printed images and cardboard patches) is entirely devoid of grandeur and opulence, especially when compared to the objects it represents. By collecting, processing, and rearranging images from discarded boxes found in public spaces, the designer incorporated the physical items into the decoration and structure of an exotic gate. Like stones taken from ruins over generations and used in new structures nearby, like rocks chiseled into bricks, these images were transformed and became part of something new.
