For some years now, we have been feeding on fragments of information about our elected officials. These tiny crumbs of truth and lies are the building blocks we use to create our mental images of these public figures. From tweets and comments to Wikipedia edit wars, the personas that emerge from our algorithm-shaped consciousness burn in our minds with an emotionally charged intensity. The portraits of our public figures may be objective, but our emotional attachment to them is subjective, and the algorithm tends to amplify our worldviews rather than offer us a balanced outlook. The articles we choose to read and the people we choose to follow shape a parallel reality for us.
For this project, portraits of elected officials were generated by DALL-E based on information obtained from ChatGPT.
The artificial intelligence capabilities of OpenAI—the company behind ChatGPT—have recently been integrated into Microsoft's search engine. However, the information these capabilities are based on is often outdated, and the algorithm's ignorance of Israeli politics, coupled with its blindness to its own limitations and the dangers they pose, leads to random answers phrased and presented as facts.
The project also features an interactive stand where visitors can have their picture taken, ask ChatGPT who they are, generate their own AI portrait, and discover themselves in the parallel reality that generative AIs are building for us at this very moment.
