The Valley Spirit Never Dies

Efrat Katz, Shlomit Yaacov

In the past year, scientists worldwide have found that one-third of all the tree species on Earth are facing the threat of extinction. Are the little things in our lives endangered too? Heart-to-heart talks? Childhood memories? Lazing about? The comfort of gazing up at the treetops through a window at the end of a long day?
In this project, the material object is copied and overlaid on itself countless times using analog photography. Through this process, matter turns into light and stills transform into a video. The human attempt to hold on to the original is destined to fail.

There used to be wind. There used to be a tree.

The artists chose to focus on a single moment and ask: Does this mean the moment only exists once, in one timeline? Does it only have one history and one non-future?
