Spinning Wheel
Noam Ina Kisch, Yuval Ayali
“Spinning Wheel” examines the relationship between the material and the virtual through one simple action: the turning of a wheel. The designers connected an analog potter’s wheel to LED lights to create the deceptive illusion of a three-dimensional hologram when the wheel revolves. The display raises questions about the growing gap between three-dimensional modeling and digital fabrication capabilities, the skills of the artist, and the properties of the material. Can virtual and augmented reality replace the human need for warmth, materiality, and manual labor? Will the ceramic material, despite its historical symbolism, be replaced by LED lights or digital code? “Spinning Wheel" is a hybrid digital-analog creation that rolls the act of “revolving” back from the virtual sphere to its ancient origins.
